Well, the plumber came. Apparently the water going freezing cold then scalding in the shower is not due to anything being broken, but is because the water from the instantaneous water heater comes in at different pressures than the cold water. So getting the right temperature in the shower will continue to be a frustrating ordeal that involves an insanely high degree of precision in terms of tap turnings. It's easier to take a bath, if only the water didn't look so gross and scuzzy by the end, leaving me feeling equally gross and scuzzy.
